Microsoft HoloLens 2016 news: Developer Edition shipping has begun; heat issues with the holographic headset?

Microsoft HoloLens Developer Edition | Microsoft Sweden

A few days ahead of its March 30 release, Microsoft began shipping the orders for its Development Edition. However, the holographic headset goggles might be having heat issues, as Ubergizmo pointed out.

"Being different from the recently revealed Oculus Rift, the HoloLens is more independent in the sense that it is a self-contained device, and hence, there is no need for you to tether it to a PC in order for it to run. In other words, all 1.25 pounds of hardware will be carried by your face and neck muscles, and over time, it will heat up as you use it. I'm pretty sure there will be a product disclaimer somewhere in the documentation that asks you to take frequent breaks when using the HoloLens," reads the publication's take on the Microsoft HoloLens.

Along with the release of HoloLens development kit, it will also showcase a "Star Wars" application dubbed as "holoportation"  which takes the futuristic headset's technological capabilities to new heights.  Shahram Izadi from Microsoft Research showed how it works in a demo video. Through high-powered cameras and processors, the HoloLens enables users to have a 3D view of someone in another location, as it transmits all data involved to the side of the receiver. "This becomes a magical way of experiencing these live-captured memories," Izadi told Geekwire.

Playable games for the Microsoft HoloLens include Young Conker and Fragments. These games span approximately six to seven hours for each. additional leaderboard challenges in Young Conker allows players to compete with one another. According to PC World, both games are easily playable with just a large empty space and the HoloLens. Making it more interesting are the real-world objects and obstacles. Simply put, it can be compared to the HTC Vive that asks players to reserve a 6x6-foot empty space to be able to play, whereas the HoloLens encourages people to play within any given size of space.

As of the moment, no word yet regarding the official market release for the HoloLens.
