Netflix's biopic drama "The Crown" depicting the story of Queen Elizabeth II (Claire Foy) premiered only a month ago, but it has already been commissioned for a second season. The upcoming installment is expected to feature more compelling drama focusing on a new decade in the life and reign of the queen.

The first season of "The Crown" was set during the first years of Queen Elizabeth II's reign over the United Kingdom, starting from her wedding to Prince Phillip (Matt Smith) in 1947 until the retirement of Winston Churchill (John Lithgow) as prime minister in 1955.

While the freshman season of the drama focused a bit more on relationships, including the queen's conflict with Princess Margaret (Vanessa Kirby), season 2 is expected to feature more political drama.

In the last few episodes of season 1, Anthony Eden's (Jeremy Northam) reign as prime minister was already hinted. His tumultuous tenure in office is expected to be at the forefront of the new season. Given his short stint as prime minister, it's possible that viewers will also be introduced to his successors, Harold MacMillian and Sir Alex Douglas-Home.

Showrunner Peter Morgan also confirmed that the second season will begin with one of the most controversial events not just in the duration of Eden's tenure but also in the entirety of Queen Elizabeth II's reign — the Suez Crisis. He also explained why they chose not to feature it in season 1.

"I thought, 'Actually no, let's leave it on the knife's edge of Suez because Suez feels like a changing point for the country. Britain was never the same again after Suez.' Therefore, I was going to deal with that at the beginning of season two. Which we do," he told The Hollywood Reporter.

To recall, the Suez Crisis references the United Kingdom's involvement in the invasion of Egypt in October 1956 with the purpose of regaining control of the Suez Canal and removing the president, Gamal Abdel Nasser, from office.

In terms of release date, Foy revealed that they have already started production on the second season. She also teased the upcoming season.

"We're a month in. We literally pick up where we left off — in 1956," the actress revealed to Vanity Fair last month. "We get into the 60s, and it is a whole other world happening. It's really exciting, especially because we've had such a positive response and everyone's been really encouraging. It just makes everybody, especially the crew, work even harder," she added.

Netflix has yet to announce the premiere date for season 2 of "The Crown," but it is expected to arrive in November 2017.
