Director James Cameron has been working on "Avatar 2" and the three follow-up films for a while now, but a release date for the sequel has never really been designated, until now.

20th Century Fox has an untitled film by Lightstorm, which is Cameron's production company, set for Dec. 21, 2018. This film is believed to be "Avatar 2." After all, the original was released around the same time seven years ago.

A Christmas release is also in line with what the director said in the past about the release timing of the film although he said that it can still be changed if needed.

"We haven't moved that target yet, but we will if we need to," Cameron told Variety of the target release date for "Avatar 2," which is Christmas 2018.

"The important thing for me is not when the first one comes out but the cadence of the release pattern. I want them to be released as close together as possible. If it's an annual appointment to show up at Christmas, I want to make sure that we're able to fulfill that promise," he added.

Cameron has hard at work on "Avatar 2" for a while now. Just recently, he said that he is pushing for higher frame rates and a no-glasses 3D visual experience for the movie.

He said that he is pushing for such technology, which is no surprise knowing how Cameron's previous projects are also technical marvels.

With regards to the plot, Cameron teased that "Avatar 2" will be "a family saga about the struggle with the humans."

"The storyline in the sequels really follows Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and their children," he teased.

While putting together "Avatar 2," Cameron is also simultaneously working on the next three installments to make sure they are consistent in storytelling.
