"Super Mario Run" was released last year on Apple devices, leaving a lot of Android users feeling left out. Things are about to change, though, as Nintendo announced that the game will finally be released for Android on March 23.

The announcement, which was made on Twitter, also provided a link for those who want to pre-register for the game to get a notification once "Super Mario Run" is available.

Polygon reported that March 23 will also see the iOS version of "Super Mario Run" updated to version 2.0.0, which is the same one that will be readily available for Android users. A new feature of this is Battle Mode, which allows players to compete with other gamers from across the world.

According to "Super Mario" creator Shigeru Miyamoto, the game was initially released for Apple products and not for Android because of security issues. In an interview with Mashable, he, through translator Bill Trinen, said: "For us, we view our software as being a very important asset for us. And also for consumers who are purchasing the game, we want to make sure that we're able to offer it to them in a way that the software is secure, and that they're able to play it in a stable environment."

"The security element is one of the reasons that we decided to go with iPhone and iOS first," he added.

"Super Mario Run" has a one-tap platform, allowing the game to be played using just one hand. The game sees the mustachioed plumber running and jumping through various obstacles, with the player estimating the right moment when he makes his move. "Super Mario Run" is free to download. However, players can pay $10 to unlock every course in the game.
