'Game of Thrones' season 7 news: Upcoming season to premiere in July? series currently filming in Canada
"Game of Thrones" season 7 might premiere sometime in July, according to cast member Liam Cunningham.
HBO's fantasy epic drama returns this year, but the showrunners have previously confirmed that its usual April premiere will be pushed back to a later month. Filming schedules have been changed because the story requires more winter scenes. The next installment is expected to debut in summer, but cast member Liam Cunningham recently shared a more specific release window for the program.
"I've been disappointing various people around the world because it was meant to come out in April. It's July now, I think," the actor told Independent. "There's going to be a launch and something special happening this year for the premiere. The bad news is, there will only be seven episodes and the [filming for the] final season starts again as far as I know in September," he added.
Following his interview, Cunningham posted a tweet to correct his statement. The 55-year-old wrote on his Twitter page on Wednesday, claiming that he doesn't know what date "Game of Thrones" will be out, which suggests that he was supposed to keep the premiere date a secret.
Production for the next season is in full swing, and the cast and crew were spotted filming in Canada last week. Michael Jorgensen, the chair of Alberta Media Production Industries Association, confirmed to Global News that the series is currently filming in Banff, an idyllic town in Alberta. "I just spent the weekend with the DOP [director of photography] of Game of Thrones in Banff," Jorgensen stated, adding, "They are shooting."
Last month, actress Maisie Williams shared photos of her visit at Banff National Park via Instagram. William, who is best known for her role as Arya Stark, was reportedly in the area to shoot scenes with her direwolf Nymeria. Arya sent her beloved direwolf back in season 1, but there are speculations that they will finally reunite when the next installment picks up.
HBO has yet to announce an official premiere date for "Game of Thrones" season 7.
