UFC news 2017: Daniel Cormier says he wants a rematch with Jon Jones
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier never had his revenge on Jon Jones. The two met back in 2015 when Jones still held the belt, and Cormier was utterly defeated in that bout. But before he can avenge the only loss of his career at UFC 200, Jones was pulled out of the match after he tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs).
Jones had been suspended for a year by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), but that suspension ends on July. When he comes back to the octagon, Cormier will be waiting. In an interview with FOX Sport's "The Herd," Cormier said that he has some unfinished business to take care of with Jones.
"I'd fight him. If that was the case before, then the guy that I'm gonna fight the next time is not gonna be the same guy I saw the first time because of USADA and the drug testing that we are under now. But you know what, Colin, yes I would fight him. It doesn't matter. I have to get the competitor in me and my belief in my coaches and my skill — I have to get that back," he told host Colin Cowherd.
He went on to say that he was more than willing to fight Jones after UFC 200 even when he knew that his opponent was taking PEDs. Cormier just wants to get his hands on Jones. He just wants to avenge his loss, and he feels that his career would not be complete if he doesn't fight his rival again in the octagon.
Cormier has been on a roll since his loss to Jones. He defeated Anthony Johnson at UFC 187 to win the belt that Jones vacated, and he also defended the title against Alexander Gustafsson and Anderson Silva.
Right now, a potential rematch with Jones is still up in the air, but fans would definitely love to see the two square up again.
