Fans of the highly popular anime series "Tokyo Ghoul" have been waiting for the developments of the anticipated third season. However, if the latest rumors are anything to go by, the creators of the show could not proceed with the production stage for Season 3 as there is still not enough contents to cover at this point. Instead of the earlier rumored release this year, "Tokyo Ghoul" Season 3 is now expected to premiere sometime next year.

There are rumors that FUNimation, the studio behind the successful anime series, has considered creating new story arcs for "Tokyo Ghoul" in order for them to proceed with the production. However, they have also reportedly considered the reception of the fans if they chose to air non-canon episodes or story bits that are not present in the original manga version of the same name. It is noted that the audience's reception to filler episodes in anime series have been mixed, that is why the production team would not risk having the "Tokyo Ghoul" fans disappointed, and they would rather air the new season of the series next year with its contents similar to the source material.

According to News Every Day, the creative team of "Tokyo Ghoul" would wait for a couple of weeks or months until there is enough ground for the third season to cover. At this point, the manga series of "Tokyo Ghoul" is only a few chapters ahead of the series where the first season concluded. There is a certain number of chapters that the manga must be ahead of the anime series before the team can commence with the production. This is the reason why 2017 is the best year for "Tokyo Ghoul" to return with new episodes.

Regarding the possible plotline of "Tokyo Ghoul" Season 3, BREATHE Cast reported that Touka Kirishima is likely to be the new main protagonist of the series. It was noted that Kirishima's character in the original manga version has been of great importance to the team, and he is seen as the prime training associate of the series' reigning lead, Ken. The speculations that "Tokyo Ghoul" will see a shift in the narrative in the coming new episodes have increased since the fans' reception in the present storyline for Ken's character has been mostly negative.
