By now, most fans are aware that Ghost Rider will be making an appearance in the fourth season of "Agents of SHIELD," but instead of the most popular incarnation, Johnny Blaze, the series decided to have the comic's current incarnation of the Spirit of Vengeance, Robbie Reyes.

In an interview with ComicBook.com, "Agents of SHIELD" executive producer, Jeph Loeb, talked about the character.

"It's incredibly exciting, and I know a lot of people were speculating on it," said Loeb. "Not only is it exciting to be able to tell people that it's Robbie Reyes, but that we have this unbelievably cool car, that 1969 black Charger that's still on the floor of the convention, and then on top of that that we've just announced that Gabriel Luna, who is an extremely talented young actor who people may know from 'Matador' on El Rey. It's going to be a hell of a season."

Loeb went on to explain that Robbie Reyes is the Ghost Rider chosen because of Robbie's relationship to his brother. "We picked Robbie, actually, because our show, at the end of day, is always about family, and the fact that Robbie's relationship with Gabe [Robbie's disabled brother] is so much a part of his character, and the world of east LA, which is not a place that we've ever gone to in the Marvel universe, was just a really exciting way."

Robbie Reyes' backstory saw him getting killed by some mysterious gunmen after an illegal street race, which he joined in order to get some money for his disabled brother. Instead of dying, Reyes was then possessed by the Spirit of Vengeance, and thus he became the new Ghost Rider.

It's interesting to note that Reyes' version is the first Ghost Rider to drive a muscle car. Past incarnations were more keen on using motorcycles, like Johnny Blaze and Daniel Ketch.

Gabriel Luna will play Robbie Reyes/Ghost Rider in "Agents of SHIELD" season 4, which comes out Sept. 20 on ABC.
