'Black Sails' season 4 news & update: Upcoming season to be the series' last

The fourth season of Starz's "Treasure Island" prequel series, "Black Sails," will reportedly be the show's last. The pirate adventure series promises to end with a bang, instead of dragging on to faint pop.

According to Movie Pilot, "Black Sails" plans to end exactly where "Treasure Island" kicks off, with the seeds for that story already being planted towards the season's end.

To those unfamiliar with Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island," the story follows young Jim Hawkins who got on a boat in search of Captain Flint's lost treasure. Little did he know that the boat that he got on would be full of pirates who were after the very same treasure. The show's events are set 20 years prior to the book.

"Black Sails" has featured appearances of all the known characters from the book, as well as real-life pirates in history. Captain Flint (Toby Stephens), one of the show's main characters, is the owner of the treasure that was being looked for in the books. Long John Silver (Luke Arnold) and Billy Bones (Tom Hopper) also appeared in the book, with the latter being one of the first pirates that Jim Hawkins met in the book. Rackham (Toby Schmitz) is no fictional character, however. He's actually based on real-life pirate Calico Jack, an English pirate captain who operated in the Bahamas during the 1800s.

The third season of "Black Sails" followed Captain Flint and Captain Vane as they tried to overthrow the British government on the island of Nassau (now called New Providence Island). Flint, with a group of marooned slaves, took the fight away from Nassau, but he lost Vane during the struggle.

The fourth season will most likely see the end of the characters that are based on real-life pirates like Rackham, Anne Bonny (Clara Paget), and Blackbeard (Ray Stevenson). Some fans are speculating that Captain Flint will also be spotted drawing the map to his famous treasure.

No official date has been announced, but "Black Sails" season 4 is slated for release in 2017.
