"Blue Bloods" season 7 has recently signed up the dashing Tom Selleck, but his star power alone may not be enough to make the show last longer than seven seasons.

According to Parent Herald, "Blue Bloods" has actually been one of the top performing shows for the CBS network despite its Friday night airtime. Yet, shows can get cancelled despite high ratings. This is because even if the viewership is high, the cost of production may not be able to meet the budget of the studio. Casting a high-end actor like Selleck could be eating a chunk of the show's budget. Selleck will be returning for his role as Police Commissioner Frank Reagan.

Frank Reagan's character comes from a multigenerational family of cops who have dedicated their lives to the New York City Police Force. Frank supposedly runs his police department like he runs his family, despite ongoing personal issues at home and at work.

In a report by Deadline, "Blue Bloods" has actually been getting an average viewership of 13.1 million. The numbers are deemed amazing despite the fact that the show airs on Friday nights, which is considered to have the least amount of traffic within the week. Its viewers consist mainly of adults aged 18-49 (1.8 rating) and adults aged 25-54 (2.6 rating).

"Blue Bloods" has also been an international hit, and is being broadcasted in more than 200 territories and run by three streaming services, Netflix, Hulu and Amazon.

With the numbers that "Blue Bloods" brings in, perhaps CBS may not be so ready to let go of the police drama just yet. But then again, shows that run for too long are prone to having more bad episodes in the further seasons; ending the show after seven seasons may preserve the quality.

"Blue Bloods" season 7 premieres Sept. 23 at 10 p.m on CBS.
