'Bourne 5' release date news 2016: 'Jason Bourne' set for June 29 premiere

"Jason Bourne," the fifth installment in the "Bourne" franchise, is set to release later this month. The movie will see Matt Damon's return as the titular Jason Bourne after nine years since his last appearance in "The Bourne Ultimatum" back in 2007.

After the flop that was "The Bourne Legacy" in 2012, people would think that they had seen the last of Jason Bourne. With Damon not even appearing in "Legacy," fans speculated that the studio wanted to have a pseudo-reboot of the franchise with Jeremy Renner. The movie bombed, however. Now it seems that Damon has finally come to terms to playing the amnesia-ridden assassin once more.

In "Jason Bourne," the story will follow Bourne with full knowledge of who he is, and he is out to uncover hidden truths about his past. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Damon revealed that viewers will find his character "in a dark and tortured place" in the upcoming installment.

The film also sees Paul Greengrass returning as director; he was also the last director to have Damon star in a "Bourne" movie with "The Bourne Ultimatum." "The Bourne Legacy" was actually directed by "Bourne" screenwriter, Tony Gilroy.

"Jason Bourne" also stars "Ex Machina" breakout actress Alicia Vikander, who plays the CIA's chief of cyber intelligence. Tommy Lee Jones will be playing the head of the CIA . The film will also have Julia Stiles returning as Nicky. "Bourne" fans can recall that Stiles has appeared in all the "Bourne" movies, except for "Legacy."

Though Damon has been a part of various movies since 1988, "The Bourne Identity" was considered to be one of his most popular films, cementing his reputation as an action star. Damon is also an accomplished screenwriter, with him and his friend Ben Affleck winning the Oscar for Best Writing back in 1998 with "Good Will Hunting."

"Jason Bourne" will hit theaters on July 29.
