'Doctor Who' season 10 cast news: Filming begins; Matt Lucas joins cast; Clara makes a cameo?

Filming for the upcoming tenth season of the long-running BBC sci-fi program "Doctor Who" has begun.

Actress Pearl Mackie, who was confirmed to play the role of the Doctor's (Peter Capaldi) new companion earlier this year, announced Day 1 of the "Doctor Who" season 10 production on Monday, June 20.

The actress also revealed in a Twitter post that actress Jenna Coleman, who played the Doctor's companion in the previous two seasons, had sent her a bouquet of flowers as a celebratory/passing of the baton gift.

"Thank you @jenna_coleman_ what a beautifully thoughtful gift," Mackie captioned the photo of the flowers. "From one companion to another."

While fans had bid Clara, the former companion, farewell at the end of the season 9 finale, it now appears that Whovians just might spot the character in the upcoming season of the beloved BBC series.

In an appearance at AwesomeCon in Washington, D.C. earlier this month, Capaldi let slip what may or may not be a major hint about the character's fate on "Doctor Who."

Speaking about Coleman's exit at the end of season 9, the "Doctor Who" star, who plays the Twelfth Doctor, said, as quoted by Zap2It, "I'm not sure how successfully Clara was able to wipe his mind."

"I just did ... I was about to tell you something I can't tell you," he teased.

As fans recall, the Doctor's mind was wiped of all memories of Clara in the season 9 ender.

However, it now appears that there may be more to Clara's story and that fans may not have seen the last of the character.

In related news, the BBC announced this month that actor Matt Lucas is reprising his role as Nardole in the premiere episode of "Doctor Who" season 10.

"I'm chuffed to bits that Nardole is returning to the TARDIS for some more adventures," the actor said. "I loved acting with Peter and I'm excited to work with Pearl."

"Doctor Who" season 10 is due to air in 2017.
