'Empire' season 3 spoilers, cast news: Mariah Carey joining show as guest star

Superstar Mariah Carey will be joining musical soap opera TV series "Empire" for season 3. Announced at the Television Critics Association's (TCA) summer press tour, Carey will be gracing the show as a guest star and will portray the role of a mega-superstar named Kitty.

According to Variety, Carey's character will join forces with Jamal Lyon (Jussie Smollett) to sing a new explosive duet. But things hit a rough patch when something came up and caused problems for the song. Kitty will be the one to help Jamal overcome the problems and deal with his personal difficulties to reach a musical breakthrough.

During the TCA panel, Taraji P. Henson, who plays Cookie Lyon, shared that she had already done some scenes with Carey, and she said that she was nothing short of "great" and "fabulous."

"She's beautiful to look at. She brings a sense of what Mariah brings to the music industry. She brought it to our show. I'm grateful she spent time with little old us," Henson said.

The episode that Carey will debut in will air on Oct. 5. Aside from the "We Belong Together" singer, "Empire" will also be welcoming other artists as guest stars on the show. As noted in a report, other announced guests who are appearing in season 3 include Taye Diggs, Sierra McClain, Kid Cudi, Birdman, and Xzibit, who actually already made a debut in season 2 finale.

"Empire" season 3 will be returning with more drama and emotional whirlwinds, especially since the last season ended with a major cliffhanger. Regarding the relationship of Cookie and Lucious (Terrence Howard), it is still to be known if the power couple will be able to work things through together. Executive producer Ilene Chaiken teased that Cookie will try to leave Lucious in season 3. She will try to move on whether Lucious agrees or not.

"Empire" season 3 will start airing on Sept. 21 on FOX.
