iPad Air 3 release date news: 2016 looking grim; fans still hopeful for its arrival this year

Fans have been patiently awaiting the announcements for the next offering of Apple's iPad Air series, but rumors have been going around that the developers have simply axed the idea.

Could the iPad Air 2 be the last of the Air series? | Apple

According to MacWorld, fans have been expecting the iPad Air 3 to be the next installment in the lineup, only to get surprised when Apple announced the release of the 9.7-inch iPad Pro instead. The new iPad Pro has new features like improved specs and design tweaks, so does that mean that Apple is officially done with the Air series to focus more on the Pro lineup?

Some opt to be more positive, as they continuously hope that Apple is just holding back its announcement for the IPad Air 3. According to Christian Daily, the next iPad Air might find its way to consumer hands by the time October rolls in. The speculation comes from analysis of the product line's launch trends over the past few years. The first iPad Air was launched October 2013, then the Air 2 found its way to the market October 2014. No release happened in October 2015, so 2016 may very well be the year that fans would get the iPad Air 3.

The iPad Air 3 was rumored to be way slimmer than its predecessors with a 6.1mm thickness. It was also said to have an aluminum chassis with a 9.7-inch display and a 2048x1536 pixel resolution.

The iPad Air 3 had been predicted to be announced during Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco last month, but the announcement never happened.

Could the iPad Air 3 be over and done for? Other fans speculate that the announcement was merely delayed and that it will be released along with the upcoming iPhone 7 later this year, but the upcoming device could very much be something else.
