'Law & Order: SVU' season 18 spoilers news: Elliot Stabler returns? Series to air episode inspired by Steven Avery's story

\"Law & Order: SVU\" season 18 coming in September. | NBC

Police procedural drama series "Law & Order: SVU" season 18 is set to premiere soon and fans are excited already to catch new episodes. The previous season left off with Lt. Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) getting closer with Captain Ed Tucker (Robert John Burke).

But according to reports, the relationship of the two will remain complicated. Going into the romantic direction could be difficult especially with spoilers suggesting that Olivia's past love, Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni), will be returning to the show.

It cannot be denied though that things may progress between Olivia and Ed. Olivia has always been an epitome of a strong, independent woman but when Ed is around, she feels much safer. His presence basically helps Olivia to loosen up. But will they ever have their chance in finding love from each other or will Elliot come in to the picture and spoil things up?

Clearly, there's a lot to look forward to with the romance side of the show but going back to its main genre, the series will be featuring a familiar storyline in one of its episodes. Reports revealed that "Law & Order: SVU" season 18 will feature an episode that is inspired by Netflix's "Making a Murderer." To those who are not in the loop yet, "Making a Murderer" is a docuseries of the real life case of Steven Avery.

The Hollywood Reporter teased that Henry Thomas ("Ouija: Origin of Evil") and Kelli Williams ("The Practice") will be guest starring in the series. Thomas will play the role of a convicted rapist who got exonerated upon release of newly tested DNA evidence after 16 years in prison. However, he gets back in a mess again after authorities point him as one involved in a deadly crime.

Meanwhile, Williams will play as Melanie, the rape victim who confirmed Thomas' character to be her attacker. The said episode is expected to air sometime in fall.

"Law & Order: SVU" season 18 will premiere on Sept. 21 at 9 p.m. on NBC.
