Last week, Swedish game developer Mojang AB announced the release date of the "Minecraft" movie. The movie will be produced by Warner Bros. and fans can expect the film to come out on May 24, 2019.

Fans will have to wait three more years until that date comes along, but  Mojang COO Vu Bui writes on the company website, "Yes, that might seem like a long time away, but it just so happens to be the right amount of time to make it completely awesome. And we all want an awesome Minecraft movie, right?" He then assures that as time goes on they will share "loads" more of information.

The film will be available to watch in 3D and IMAX, and it will be directed by Rob McElhenney of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" fame. With that in mind, viewers can expect the movie to have a comedic tone.

Mojang COO Vu Bui tells The Guardian that they wanted the movie to have a story within the "Minecraft" universe, but not about the "Minecraft" universe itself. He says that he feels that having an official lore for the universe will limit players from coming up with their own stories to tell when they play the game. This way, the universe remains as an "open sandbox" where possibilities are only limited by imagination.

This year, audiences got to watch another game-turned-movie with "The Angry Birds Movie." The popularity of the bird flinging app has grown massively worldwide, and with the "Minecraft" series, people can expect studios to bank on the brand's popularity.

"Minecraft" is a well-loved game that allows players to literally have access to an open world where they can build anything out of blocks. Players can gather resources, build towers and fortresses, and combat creatures in the game. They can even choose to go through levels designed by other players.

The movie is set to release in May of 2019, so fans of "Minecraft" have a long wait ahead of them.
