'Ray Donovan' season 5 plot spoilers update: Ray isn't saying goodbye with his death

American crime drama series "Ray Donovan" has just closed its fourth season with a bang and now fans are waiting for its next chapter to open.
The previous season wrapped up several major plot threads but it still left off with lots of questions that will require answers in the next season. In the season 4 finale, the fans were given a glimpse of how Ray Donovan (Liev Schreiber) now deals with his relationship with God.
Showrunner David Hollander spoke to TVLine and revealed that the time has finally come for Ray to make peace with his religious demons. Hollander hinted that season 5 will be portraying a different Ray — one that has already accepted who he is and one who has dropped the idea that God is going to fix his problems. For him, his new God is his family.
Hollander also spoke about the direction of Abby Donovan's (Paula Malcomson) storyline. Abby said that her cancer is going away. However, Hollander revealed that it's still uncertain for now if Abby's cancer by season 5 will really be remission-bound. What is essential here is that Ray is assured of Abby's safety. That's all that matters. More about Abby's illness will be covered in the upcoming season.
Moreover, Hollander also spoke with The Hollywood Reporter. When asked whether the series will somewhat return to its roots, the showrunner answered that he is looking forward to focusing more on "Ray working in Hollywood and with his family in Hollywood."
"Ray Donovan" will also not be ending with the lead character's death as Hollander said that he wants to come up with a storyline that is larger than that.
"We have to reach a point with Ray where we say goodbye to him, and the goodbye shouldn't be death," Hollander said. "Goodbye needs to mark a time in his life where we felt like we've seen what we needed to see," he added.
"Ray Donovan" season 5 will premiere sometime next year. No official date has been revealed yet.
