American adult animated science-fiction sitcom "Rick and Morty" is returning to the small screen sooner than expected for its season 3. Fans who watched the previous season finale may recall that at the end of the show, a certain Mr. Poopybutthole character appeared to announce to the viewers that the series will not be back earlier than a year and a half later.

But it seems like that's all been changed now as the official Twitter page of the Cartoon Network Adult Swim program revealed that they are already recording season 3, which may mean that "Rick and Morty" will be up and ready soon or is almost complete.

This may no longer be a surprise to some of the fans as co-creator Dan Harmon revealed the details during the Magic City Comic Con back in January this year. He said that they are looking at late 2016 for the season premiere.

"I think season 3 is—we're targeting around the end of this year... You guys do realize we're at the beginning of this year?" co-creator Dan Harmon said during the Magic City Comic Con.

As to what fans can expect in the third season, spoilers suggest that the story plot will be darker than ever. But since it's a comedy show, it's expected to still have the same dark humor it always has. Season 3 may also show Rick trying to escape from his intergalactic prison cell.

Rick was imprisoned along with the universe's toughest criminals in the season 2 finale. There are also reports suggesting that there will be some exploration that will be happening in the infinity of the universe inside Rick's liver.

Fans can also expect the addition of an alien overlord as the show opened a contest on Omaze wherein one lucky fan will have the chance to join the voice cast. The winner has been announced already.
