'Riverdale' cast news, updates: Robin Givens and 'Stranger Things' actress Shannon Purser join cast

Fans of the well-loved "Archie" comic book series still need to wait a while longer for the release of CW's live-action adaptation, "Riverdale." However, there is no reason to fret since updates about production are steadily streaming in, including a recent confirmation of the actors slated to join the show.
One of the new cast members of "Riverdale" is Shannon Purser, who is best known for playing Barb in the hit Netflix series "Stranger Things." According to Entertainment Weekly, Purser is set to appear in at least three episodes of the pilot season. She will be portraying Ethel Muggs, who, in the comic series, has a huge crush on Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse). However, her love life will reportedly take a different route in the live-action series.
Actress Robin Givens will also join the highly anticipated series, according to Deadline. She is set to play Sierra McCoy, the mayor of Riverdale and mother of Josie, a character from the comic spinoff, "Josie and the Pussycats." She is described as a sophisticated and determined mayor, leading Riverdale amid the turmoil surrounding the town.
The production for the first episode wrapped up in April. The filming of the rest of the season's episodes is scheduled to resume on Sept. 7. However, just a few days before filming continued, series developer Roberto Aguirre Sacasa tweeted a group photo of the cast who just flew back to the set in Vancouver for the table read for episodes 2 and 3.
"Riverdale's" pilot episode was first shown during the San Diego Comic-Con last July, and it was met with favorable reviews.
The series' first season is slated to be released in October 2016 on The CW.
