60% of Americans are satisfied with the acceptance of gays and lesbians in the country,a recent Gallup poll revealed.

The "Mood of the Nation" survey conducted earlier this month showed the signifcant increase, up from 53% in 2014.

2015 was a landmark year of achievements for the gay rights movement, particularly the U.S. Supreme Court legalizing same sex marriage in all states of the country.

Gallup initially polled American's acceptance of gays and lesbians in 2001, with resulted showing that only one third of Americans were satisfied at time.

The said rating grew from 32% in 2001 to 40% eight years later, steadily increasing in each poll between the years of 2006 to 2014, during which different gay rights group battled for marriage rights in various states.

The federal government at that time also repealed the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy, whilst the Supreme Court struck down much of the Federal Defense of Marriage Act.
