John Watson (Martin Freeman) and Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) in \"Sherlock\" | BBC

Fans of the crime drama series "Sherlock" will still have to wait until next year to catch new episodes of the show. But while waiting, they can get updates from spoilers of what will unfold soon in season 4.

According to reports, Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch), together with his sidekick Doctor John Watson (Martin Freeman), will be coming back for new adventures. New challenges and evil await them, and they would need to stick their heads together if they want to get through all of it.

Fans also need to brace themselves for what's to come as spoilers reveal that the new season is going to be darker than the previous ones. In a roundtable interview with Collider during the San Diego Comic-Con, Cumberbatch said that the series is going to be "myopically dark."

"You're talking about the end of the universe darkness. You can't see in front of you and would walk into everything dark," Cumberbatch said.

Spoilers also teased that, in season 4, Holmes will embark on a journey to London again after his forced exile. There, he will reunite with Watson and his wife, Mary Elizabeth Watson (Amanda Abbington).

Professor Jim Moriarty (Andrew Scott) is also set to return from the grave, which means Holmes will need to deal with his old foe again. But Moriarty isn't even the main problem.

Actor Toby Jones is joining the show to play an unnamed villain character. However, his character isn't just any typical villain as it was mentioned that Jones' character is the "darkest villain" that the show will have. Co-creator Steven Moffat said that the character is pure, and he predicted that fans will surely find him horrific as soon as he gets introduced.

"Sherlock" season 4 will be based on Arthur Conan Doyle's books once again, so those who have already read them will most likely have an inkling of what's to come. "Sherlock's" fourth season is set to premiere sometime in 2017.
