'Star Trek Beyond' release date, plot news: Movie is franchise's 'best,' says John Cho; sequel already in the works

"Star Trek Beyond" could be the "best" in the franchise, according to star John Cho, who reprises his role as Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu in the upcoming film.

"When I read the script, my emotional impression was that it felt very much like the best of the original series. It felt like the series felt to me," the actor admitted toFamous Monsters.

To illustrate his point, he said, "The first [film] that we made didn't entirely feel like that to me." Cho suggested that this was achieved because of "Star Trek Beyond" director Justin Lin as well as Simon Pegg and Doug Jung's tandem.

Cho said that Lin "cared about getting it right" and "moving the characters forward," which the actor believes was done well in "Star Trek Beyond." He also lauded how Pegg and Jung gave script a "human touch."

Combining this produced what Cho believes is the best "Star Trek" treat that anyone will be excited to see when it hits the cinemas in two months.

Prior to the release of "Star Trek Beyond," Paramount Pictures registered "Star Trek 4" to Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), showing the studio's confidence in the upcoming film.

Preparations for this unannounced sequel are reportedly already in motion, which means that fans will have more to look forward to from the "Star Trek" franchise.

A TV series is also currently in the works in CBS, so fans will get to see a lot more of Captain Kirk and his trusty crew both on the big screen and the small screen.

Hitting the cinemas on July 22, "Star Trek Beyond" focuses on the rise of a new villain in the person of Krall, to be played by "Luther" star Idris Elba.

The film also stars Chris Pine as Captain Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock and Zoe Saldana as Lieutenant Nyota Uhura.
