'Star Wars Rebels' season 3 will be airing this fall

While "Star Wars" fans wait for the release of Gareth Edwards' "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," they can get an earlier "Star Wars" fix this coming fall with the incoming third season of "Star Wars Rebels."
Slash Film reports that an official release date has been set for the series, and fans can expect the rebel crew of the Ghost to come swinging back into action on Sept. 24, 2016. The season will induct Grand Admiral Thrawn into the official canon. After Disney acquired the rights to Lucasfilm, Thrawn, along with the rest of the expanded universe, was put into the "Legends" category of the "Star Wars" universe, but now, he's back, and the series officially makes him a canon character.
Thrawn was created by Timothy Zhan back in the 90s, and he has gotten great acclaim for being one of the most interesting villains in the "Star Wars" universe. Compared to Darth Vader who intimidates his troops with fear, Thrawn actually instills loyalty among his soldiers and listens to their suggestions. He also takes some time to study his enemies meticulously, making him an expert tactician against the Rebel Alliance. Thrawn's great ability for empathy made him the enemy that the Emperor could not be.
X-Wing pilot Wedge Antilles will also appear in the series. In the expanded universe, Wedge actually has a rich backstory, and he even led his own attack force called Rogue Squadron. But when Disney debunked the entire "Legends" universe, fans were stuck with a blank slate for Wedge. The series now has the opportunity to introduce fans to the Rebel Alliance's Ace pilot.
The third season for "Star Wars Rebels" premieres on Sept 24, 2016 at 8:30 p.m. EDT on Disney XD.
