'Steven Universe' season 3 release date, episode news: New season features all-musical episode, 'OITNB' actress as new Crystal Gem

The hotly anticipated "Steven Universe" season 3 is almost here and when it drops, fans will be rewarded for their long wait.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the new season of the Emmy-nominated animated series will feature one all-musical episode and will see the introduction of a new Crystal Gem.

The musical-themed episode, titled "Mr. Greg," will air on Tuesday, July 19. In it, Steven's father suddenly becomes filthy rich and takes Steven and Pearl to live a life of luxury in Empire City. The episode is a long-awaited treat for "Steven Universe" fans. One of the Cartoon Network show's greatest strengths is its catchy soundtrack filled with original music and heartwarming songs, and an episode jam-packed with musical numbers will surely be one of the season's highlights.

Also in season 3, the Crystal Gems will be getting a lot bigger with the addition of a new Crystal Gem called Bismuth. The new character, who will be voiced by "Orange Is the New Black" star Uzo Aduba, will appear near the end of the season in a 22-minute special dubbed "Bismuth."

Bismuth, who is woken out of stasis in the present, was among those who fought alongside the Gems in their fight to save Earth 5,000 years ago. According to Gizmodo, the episode will reveal that Bismuth has a "surprising connection" with Pearl, Amethyst, and Garnet.

In the new trailer for "Steven Universe" season 3, the purple-skinned, rainbow-haired Crystal Gem is seen learning what became of the rest of the Gems who fought in the war. While this will surely be an emotional moment, it is unclear if Bismuth will stay on and become a member of the team or will only be appearing in the said episode.

"Summer of Steven" kicks off on Monday, July 18, and will run until Aug. 12. A new episode will air every weekday during that period, which means that there will be 20 new episodes of "Steven Universe" for fans to enjoy.

"Steven Universe" season 3 debuts on Monday, July 18, at 7 p.m. ET on Cartoon Network.
