The FX spy/period drama "The Americans" aired its much-anticipated fourth season finale on Wednesday, June 8, dropping some major bombshells in the process.

The episode, titled "Persona Non Grata," saw Philip's (Matthew Rhys) Russian son Mischa making his first onscreen appearance, William (Dylan Baker) infecting himself with the deadly Lassa virus, and the Jennings possibly going back to Russia, among many other twist-y and nail-bitingly suspenseful developments.

In an interview with The Walll Street Journal, "The Americans" showrunners Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields spoke about constructing season 5, introducing Mischa, and where they see the series going from here.

When asked about Mischa's plotline, Weisberg said that they had been reminiscing about the show's freshman season, when it was unclear if Philip actually had a son or not. According to the co-showrunner, while they had no specific answer to that particular conundrum, they were enjoying the ambiguity surrounding Philip's supposed child with Irina (Marina Squerciati).

"So introducing that plotline meant making a final decision that that was a real person and a real character," he said, "which is probably more satisfying."

Weisberg and Fields also talked about mapping out the next two seasons of "The Americans." Seasons 5 and 6, which will be the show's final two seasons, will air in 2017 and in 2018. Season 5 will consist of 13 episodes, while season 6 will have 10.

According to Fields, they have already written the first two scripts for "The Americans" season 5 and have locked in the next five stories.

"We also have some specific ideas for the shape and big moves for the conclusion of the show over the sixth season," he said.

Speaking with Vox, Fields said, "Their story is unfolding for us, and there seems to have been less of a need for us to think too consciously about a guiding word or a guiding theme."

"Maybe it's because ultimately in coming to the ending, we return to the central ones of the show: trust, identity, family, marriage," he explained.

While it is expected to air sometime in early 2017, FX has not announced the official premiere date for "The Americans" season 5.
