The Nathan James and its crew are taking on another dangerous mission in "The Last Ship" season 3, but this time, the gang will have to get things done without Dr. Rachel Scott (Rhona Mitra), the intrepid paleomicrobiologist who created the cure for the virus that nearly wiped out humanity.

In the opening moments of the season 3 premiere, viewers found that Rachel had not survived the shooting in the season 2 finale. "The Last Ship" creator and executive producer Steve Kane spoke to TVLine about the decision to kill off the fan favorite character, saying, "Rachel was just so beloved and she did so much for the world by coming up with the cure, it was a hard decision to make."

"A lot of shows kill off characters way more quickly than we do and with more blood, but we felt that the challenge for Chandler and the world with Rachel gone was that much greater, and her shadow cast across season 3 would give her in some ways more of an immortality," he explained.

True enough, the season 3 premiere episode was called "The Scott Effect," and, as Kane told the outlet, the entire season may as well be called that, too. According to the "Last Ship" boss, Rachel's death will impact every decision that Chandler (Eric Dane) makes from here on out. Her death has also served to "leave [Chandler] alone as the sort of 'godfather of the new world,'" Kane added.

But while Rachel's exit appears to be a pretty straightforward one, TV Guide has cast some doubt on the character's supposed demise. According to the website, the fact that audiences don't really see Rachel dying nor get to see her dead body nor get any flashbacks to the night of her death seems somewhat suspicious.

In addition, the outlet says that the fact that Rachel was a central character in the first two seasons of "The Last Ship" combined with the speed at which the show moves on from her story make it seem like her "death" is just a set-up intended to get fans speculating about her true fate.

"The Last Ship" season 3 airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on TNT.
