Over the course of two seasons, the Nathan James sailed around the world after the global pandemic killed off most of Earth's inhabitants. In "The Last Ship" season 3, the show will enter a new chapter and see the Nathan James passengers actively trying to rebuild the world.

After spending the last two years distributing the cure for the virus that almost wiped out humans, Chandler and his crew will now focus on trying to fix what the virus has destroyed. With the cure now being spread through breath and touch, the show's focus will shift to the societal and political problems that arose during and after the pandemic.

According to TV Guide, in season 3, "The Last Ship" will address the territorial issues, as well as the resulting political conflicts and acts of violence, that have cropped up around the world.

The new season is also said to be going global, with the first few episodes taking the viewers to Asia. According to Celeb Dirty Laundry, fans should expect to see action in China, Japan and Vietnam in the upcoming season.

In addition, TV Ruckus reports that Chandler is poised to take on a bigger — and more dangerous — role in the new season of "The Last Ship."

According to the outlet, in season 3, Chandler's new title as Chief of Naval Operations will take him into new territory without the aid of his crew. President Michener (Mark Moses) will send Chandler on a mission to find out if Chinese president Peng Wu (Fernando Chien) is indeed hoarding the virus cure developed by Rachel Scott (Rhona Mitra), which the Nathan James has been distributing.

Unfortunately, the ship will come under attack and Commander Slattery (Adam Baldwin) will be forced to record a message saying that he and his crew have become prisoners of war. In the trailer for the third season, Slattery and his men are seen being transported in a boat in what appears to be a swampy area. After learning about Slattery's situation, Chandler vows to find and rescue them.

In an interview with TV Guide, "The Last Ship" executive producer Michael Bay said: "If you're due for a big summer blockbuster and don't have a babysitter on a Sunday night, 'The Last Ship' is the show for you. We take you around the world and back in 42 minutes."

The third season of "The Last Ship" premieres Sunday, June 12, at 9 p.m. ET on TNT.
