'The Originals' season 4 release date, plot news: Will Davina return?

Fans of the "Vampire Diaries" spinoff series, "The Originals," have been anticipating the show's next season after its gripping season 3 finale. The last season had Marcel (Charles Michael Davis) triumph over his bout with the Mikaelsons, but with a price. Davina, (Danielle Campbell) his ward, was killed by the Mikaelsons, and this was what pushed Marcel to take revenge on the family. But does this mean that viewers have seen Davina's end? She is a witch after all.

A lot of fan speculation has come to light that Davina will not stay dead. In a world of vampires and witches, how can one expect resurrection not to be an option? In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Michael Narducci said Davina is a "special entity," and even if her character is supposedly gone, it doesn't mean that the show is done telling more stories about her. Narducci also talks about the show's decision in killing Davina, which they didn't want to do.

Apparently, the choice to sacrifice Davina was done to emphasize that the Mikaelsons put family above all else; and if it's for the good of the family, they will sacrifice a friend if they have to. The decision to kill Davina was apparently "the best story."

As for the Mikaelsons, season 3 found all of them put into a perpetual sleep, with family member Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) hauling off their caskets away from New Orleans with her daughter Hope, in search of the cure to her family's predicament.

Rebekah (Claire Holt) has been cursed to become a ripper, Freya (Riley Voelkel) was poisoned, while Elijah (Daniel Gillies) and Kol (Nathaniel Buzolic) have been bitten and there is no cure. All of the family is linked to Klaus (Joseph Morgan), but even then, he has been stabbed by the Tunde blade which has put him in a pain-induced coma.

Fans may surely see the Mikaelsons coming back seeing as they are the titular "Originals" of the show, but what will they do once they get back from their sleep?

"The Originals" season 4 will air January next year.
