'The Vampire Diaries' season 7 finale spoilers: Elena back and alive in 'Gods and Monsters'?

Is it really Elena (Nina Dobrev) that Damon saw in the armory in \"The Vampire Diaries\" season 7 finale? | Tina Rowden/The CW

A familiar face is rumored to turn up in the highly-anticipated "The Vampire Diaries" season 7 finale "Gods and Monsters."

Rumor has it that Nina Dobrev might reprise her role one more time as Elena Gilbert in the episode since it will focus on the Armory vault, where her body is being kept.

The synopsis for "The Vampire Diaries" season 8 finale suggests that the only way for Bonnie (Kat Graham) to rid of the hunter curse lies inside the Armory vault.

Since Elena is heavily involved in the Armory storyline, it is now speculated that Dobrev will play the character again in "The Vampire Diaries" season 7 finale as a big treat for fans of the character who the actress portrayed for six seasons of the supernatural drama.

Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and company will stop at nothing to save Bonnie and with no more options left for them to try, they resort to entering the Armory and seeing firsthand the horrors it is known for, including Elena.

In the promo for "The Vampire Diaries" season 7 finale, Damon, after preparations and help from the group, proceeds to go into the vault. Unless Damon's mind is playing tricks on him, he saw a glimpse of Elena walking around there.

Although it could merely be a tease, it also presents the possibility that Elena might indeed show herself in the episode, even just for a few seconds. Fans are certainly excited for her possible return although others believe she will merely be mentioned and nothing more.

On the other hand, "The Vampire Diaries" season 7 finale could also put Bonnie in greater danger.

Her character is at the center of the season 7 finale, where the curse Rayna (Leslie-Anne Huff) has the group frantic for a cure. Stefan (Paul Wesley) believes that Caroline's (Candice King) twins will be able to break the spell in the vault.

It is still a mystery if the group will be successful, but media outlets fear for Bonnie's life. Since her essayer is no longer returning the show after season 8, it is possible that her days are numbered.

There are also talks of Damon biting the dust. The synopsis for "The Vampire Diaries" season 7 finale teases that he will make "an ultimate sacrifice" to save his friends.

"The Vampire Dairies" season 7 finale "Gods and Monsters" will air Friday, May 13 at 8 p.m. EDT on The CW.
