'The Vampire Diaries' season 8 premiere date and spoilers: Nina Dobrev to reprise role as Katherine?

Supernatural drama series "The Vampire Diaries" season 7 ended on a major cliffhanger. Fans are now itching to know what will happen next in season 8 especially since it left off with Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Enzo (Michael Malarkey) lured and trapped by an evil monster in a vault and returned for some killing spree.

Fortunately for the "TVD" fans, they can now mark their calendars as to when they will know the answers to the questions from the season 7 finale. The CW Network has announced already the premiere date of "The Vampire Diaries" season 8 and it's going to be on Oct. 21.

There's no word yet on what the new season will bring to the table but there are rumors and speculations going around. One rumor that is currently on top of the mill is the return of Nina Dobrev. The show surprised everyone with Dobrev's return in the season finale. She didn't personally appear though, but her voice did.

The reason why Damon got lured deep into the vault was because he heard the voice of Dobrev's character, Elena. It was no old material as Dobrev personally came in to the studio to do automated dialogue replacement (ADR). Executive producer Julie Plec revealed this information to TVLine wherein she also divulged that Dobrev will be back in the series.

She did not specify that she will be back in season 8 but she mentioned that the actress will make her comeback for the series finale whenever that may be. The question though is if Dobrev will return as Elena or as her doppelganger Katherine. Some speculate that it could be the latter while some believe that it's going to be the former for the most-awaited Damon and Elena reunion.

Not everyone is happy with the news though. Reports say that a couple of the fans expressed their opinion about the return of Elena in Damon's life. One even said that the chemistry of Elena and Damon is dull and Damon is better off without his girlfriend.
