Supernatural drama series "The Vampire Diaries" closed its season 7 with a major cliffhanger. But more than that, it brought back a beloved character — sort of. As fans can remember, last season's finale heard the voice of Nina Dobrev again. Fans hoped she'd show up again but everything was just a flashback in Damon's (Ian Somerhalder) head. There was no Elena. But could the season finale indicate that Elena will be back in season 8?

According to a report by TVLine, the voice-over of Elena was no old file as Dobrev personally came to the set to record her automated dialogue replacement (ADR) just for that scene. Now fans are crossing their fingers tight that there will be a reunion for Elena and Damon in "The Vampire Diaries" season 8. The question though is when it would be.

Executive producer Julie Plec shared that it's already certain that Elena will be back. It's only a matter of timing but she did mention that she's most likely to make a comeback in the season finale. There is no date for that yet but Plec is reassuring fans.

"It's what she and I kind of agreed on when she decided to move on, and it's what I've got in my head," Plec says.

Meanwhile, season 8 is going to have a new big bad. Season 7 ended with Damon being lured farther into the mysterious and evil vault after hearing Elena's voice and having romantic visions of them together.

When Stefan (Paul Wesley) and the others managed to open the vault several months after, Damon and Enzo (Michael Malarkey), who was also trapped in the vault trying to save Damon, were no longer there. So what was in that vault?

Melty detailed that the evil thing inside the vault is not going to be revealed yet until season 8. Plec divulged that the new big bad is going to be unknown to the audience until the right timing. Whatever or whoever it could be, fans can expect a dark and twisted season 8.
