'Tomb Raider' movie reboot news & updates: Set to release March 2018; To be based on 2013 game reboot

Fans have known for a while that Alicia Vikander of "Ex Machina" fame had landed the role of Lara Croft for the movie reboot of "Tomb Raider," and they will be pleased to know that the movie will be set to hit on March 16, 2018.
"Tomb Raider" the game had been rebooted back in 2013 with resounding applause to the developers for bringing Lara Croft back into life. With 13 years since the last "Tomb Raider" movie, the franchise is prime for a reboot as well -- with a new Lara Croft and a new story for fans -- seeing that the first movies haven't been holding up well over time.
The first movie, "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider," was released back in 2001. It starred Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft, with other stars such as Daniel Craig, Iain Glenn, and Jon Voight filling up the supporting cast. Though the movie was not critically praised, it proved to be a box office success, gaining $272.7 million worldwide. The sequel, "Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life," however, didn't do as well, as it gained only $156 million against a $95 million budget. The movie was also slammed, receiving a worse rating than its predecessor.
The director of the as-yet-untitled "Tomb Raider" movie, Norwegian director Roar Uthaug, said that he will be drawing inspiration from the 2013 reboot of the game, which is fitting since the Angelina Jolie movies were based on the original and were made way before the reboot was even conceived.
A lot of parallels can be seen with this movie and the video game it will be based on. Other than the fact that both are reboots, both have also been rebooted with studios different from their predecessors. The original "Tomb Raider" games were developed by Eidos and the 2013 reboot was developed by Square Enix. Likewise, the Angelina Jolie "Tomb Raider" movies were originally produced by Paramount studios, and now it is being developed by Warner Bros. and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (or MGM).
The "Tomb Raider" film reboot will be coming out in March 2018, and it will star the Oscar-winning actress Vikander as Lara Croft.
