'True Detective' season 3 renewal news 2016: Nic Pizzolatto still undecided about continuing saga?

"True Detective" season 3 could still happen, but fans will have to be extremely patient for it. There's a new rumor going around that it might be out no earlier than 2018.

Nic Pizzolatto, the creator of the crime drama series, has signed a contract with HBO through 2018 just November of last year.

According to Variety, HBO, around that time, was very interested in doing "True Detective" season 3, although they gave Pizzolatto the choice on how he'd want to do it.

Pizzolatto can choose to work with other writers, do it alone or have a new showrunner involved. There hasn't been any update about this, but HBO was reportedly adamant about getting an answer from the award-winning writer.

The chances of "True Detective" season 3 happening will now depend on Pizzolatto's interest to continue the anthology. The fact that he signed an overall deal up to 2018 with HBO hints that his project with HBO may have something to do with revisiting his work of genius.

However, some reports suggest that "True Detective" season 3 might not be that project after all, not with former HBO comedy programming chief Casey Bloys as the network's programming chief.

Last month, Bloys replaced Michael Lombardo, who was the one at the post when "True Detective" began strongly and went downhill.

Lombardo admitted that he rushed Pizzolatto to finish the series' second season, which resulted in bad reception from the viewers and critics.

The Hollywood Reporter claims that with Bloys as the new head, Pizzolatto will likely come up with a new project for HBO rather than pursue "True Detective" season 3.

"True Detective" fans have been feverishly hoping and praying that the crime anthology will be restored to its former glory in season 3, especially now that HBO recognized its fault.

However, nothing is set in stone yet for now, but if Pizzolatto ever decides to develop "True Detective" season 3, it will likely be here by 2018.
