'True Detective' season 3 renewal news: Matthew McConaughey wishes to return, discussed possibility with HBO?

HBO hasn't made "True Detective" season 3 official yet, but there's one actor interested in reviving the series – Matthew McConaughey.

The actor played the role of Rustin Cohle in the first season of the HBO series. "I miss Rust Cohle, man. I miss watching him on Sunday nights," McConaughey admitted to Rich Eisen of "The Rich Eisen Show."

According to Vanity Fair, McConaughey went so far as to reach out to show creator Nic Pizzolatto and HBO on the possibility of reprising his role in "True Detective" season 3.

However, he will only do it if the "True Detective" season 3 script gives him the same feeling he got in the first season in order for him to return for a new season.

"It would have to be the right context, the right way," McConaughey told Eisen. "That thing—when I read [the original script] I knew in 20 minutes if I can play this guy, Rustin Cohle, I'm in," he continued.

It is still unknown if "True Detective" season 3 will happen following the poor reception towards the second season, which starred Rachel McAdams, Vince Vaughn and Colin Farrell.

Pizzolatto has renewed his contract with HBO up to 2018, although there's no word if he will decide on doing "True Detective" season 3.

HBO recognizes the failure of "True Detective" season 2. It will be one year this month since the show ended, but the network hasn't mentioned plans about the show.

Former HBO president Michael Lombardo admitted earlier this year that it was his fault that the show's second season wasn't as good as the first. He revealed that he pressured Pizzolatto into finishing the script.

"I set him up to deliver, in a very short time frame, something that became very challenging to deliver," Lombardo admitted.

At the moment, it is still a mystery whether or not "True Detective" season 3 will happen.
