'Vikings' season 4B spoilers: Filming complete, Ragnar chooses his successor, Bjorn travels the world
When "Vikings" season 4 returns, Ragnar (Travis Fimmel) will be ready to find the successor to the throne. After abandoning his people in Kattegat to deal with his defeat at the hands of his brother Rollo (Clive Standen), he returns ready to proclaim a new king.
In the trailer for the second half of "Vikings" season 4, it's Ivar the Boneless (Alex Hogh Andersen) who he builds up as the inheritor of the crown. There are a lot of reasons why his crippled son was chosen.
"Ivar is the dark side of the Vikings in a way, but because you never know what he's going to do, he's very unpredictable and he's very dangerous," Michael Hirst, the creator of "Vikings," told Variety.
"Ragnar didn't want to be a ruler and he wanted to establish a farming community — he was a farmer. So some of his sons turned more towards that side of Ragnar and the curious side, the explorer," he continued.
This is what ultimately set Ivar apart from his brothers in "Vikings" season 4. "Ivar has decided that he is the heir of Ragnar because Ragnar chose him when he went back to England," Hirst said.
"Vikings" season 4 will also further show Ragnar transform from a young lad into an old man. Hirst also teased that Ragnar's son Bjorn (Alexander Ludwig) will be out in the world where his "curiosity" will take him.
With regards to Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick), she would very much be a part of "Vikings" season 4, with Hirst going so far as to calling her swordsmaiden the show's "soul."
In an interview with The Boston Herald, Fimmel revealed that filming is complete for the entirety of "Vikings" season 4. For those who do not know, this season was ordered for 20 episodes, which is double than the usual.
Hirst said that he isn't fazed by it because he always thought of "Vikings" as long-term and that he had more stories to tell.
"Vikings" season 4 is rumored to return this July, if not this fall.
