After the release of the original "Doom" some 22 years ago, Bethesda Softworks appears all set to formally unveil the fourth and latest version of this science fiction horror-themed first-person shooter video game during the 2015 Electronic Entertainment Expo, or E3, in Los Angeles on June 14.

"Doom" is considered one of the most significant and influential titles in the video game industry since it was the title that sparked the popularity of first-person shooter games.

In "Doom," a player assumes the role of a space marine, popularly known as "Doomguy," as he battles his way through swarms of invading demons from Hell.

The launch of the game will follow the release of its last title, "Doom 3," in 2004. The game is slated for simultaneous release on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, but with no confirmed release date yet.

By all indications, "Doom" will be a reboot of the original game.

Bethesda and game developer id Software recently released a four second-long teaser trailer of "Doom" which focused on the Super Shotgun featured in the game. The trailer also showed the return of the red skeleton monster Revenant. It showed a version of Revenant that was last seen in "Doom 2." However, this time Revenant appears to have much more formidable weapons and rocket launchers strapped onto its shoulders.

The video footage from the game shown on YouTube shows a European-like setting. As with other games in the series, hordes of soldiers are shown running through a war-torn city.

The soon to be released game has gone through a number of phases. At one point, "Doom" was even scrapped entirely and developers had to start from scratch to craft a new game.

After the teaser trailer was released, more news emerged about the version of "Doom" which was scrapped in 2011. Online gaming sites described the scrapped game as a version of "Call of Duty" and agreed with id Software studio director Tim Willits who stated in 2013 that the game lacked "soul and spirit."
