'Emerald City' season 1 episode 3 spoilers: NBC's 'Wizard of Oz' retelling features a darker, deadlier adventure for Dorothy Gale

Dorothy Gale (Adria Arjona) is definitely not someone to be messed with in NBC’s new fantasy series “Emerald City.” | YouTube/Emerald City

Dorothy (Adria Arjona) is definitely not in Kansas anymore. Then again, neither is she in the familiar Oz of the L. Frank Baum classic. In this iteration of Oz, the Yellow Brick Road is really a poppy-laden path that promises more death than hope to the transplanted Kansan's quest to go back home.

The back-to-back premiere episodes of "Emerald City" seem to have put everyone in a bad light where Dorothy's safety is concerned. The Wizard (Vincent D'Onofrio) wants to kill her, just like the Wicked Witch of the East (Florence Kasumba) tried and failed to do. Her amnesiac travel companion, Lucas (Oliver Jackson-Cohen), who may have once served the Wizard's Guard, has just shown a surprisingly violent side, and the child Tip (Jordan Loughran) whom she has just freed from the clutches of a strict and seemingly crazed guardian, has just turned from being a boy into a girl with a thick, curly mane.

The upcoming episode 3 of the newest "Wizard of Oz" retelling should shed more light on the mysteries of Oz and the various characters populating it. Titled "Mistress-New-Mistress" the episode will finally let Dorothy in on The Wizard's true intentions after a fatal brush up with the Wizard's Guards led by the Wizard's most trusted, Eamonn (Mid Hamada).

Glinda (Joely Richardson), although far removed from her mild-mannered counterpart in the classic "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," seems to be working for some greater good as she endeavors to overthrow The Wizard who has banned the use of magic in all of Oz.

Then again, who's to say which faction is on the side of good and evil at this point? Is it The Wizard with no true magic, but who has ruled Emerald City well, or the witches who once reigned Oz before The Wizard rose to power? Whose side will Dorothy ultimately take? And will she ever learn to harness the magic she seems to have acquired when she killed East and gained the witch's bejeweled gloves? Which adaptation of an Oz character will she meet next as she ventures forward on her quest to go back home?

Or perhaps, judging by the mysterious circumstances of her birth, could she have already found her way back to her one true home?

"Emerald City" season 1 episode 3 airs on Friday, Jan. 13, at 9 p.m. EST on NBC.
