To this day, the fate of "Girl Meets World" season 4 hangs in the balance. Disney remains tight-lipped about the show's renewal; thus, fans are worried the fourth installment will never come, even while the current third season is running through to 2017.

There were earlier talks that the reason for the purported cancellation is the evolving storyline of the series. Apparently, Disney feels there's no way for the storyline to go but on to more mature turf. With Disney's target being the younger TV audience, a mature storyline just won't cut it.

If it were up to Rowan Blanchard, who plays lead character Riley Matthews on the series, she would love for the series to continue. Should Disney drop it, she will be glad to have it air on another network, like Freeform perhaps.

In an interview with She Knows, the actress said she knows as much as the next person does concerning the fate of the series. She admitted that she and her co-stars are hoping for the green light for season 4, as she feels the series' story is too important not to continue.

"I feel like it's an important story to tell. But as of right now, we just finished [filming] Season 3 and we're still waiting on the word. But we do have more episodes coming out this year that air into early 2017, so we're covered for a little bit," she told the outlet.

However, more recent reports point to the declining ratings of the series as the reason why it's risking cancellation and not its viewers maturity level. A source reports that "Girl Meets World" began its maiden season with an average of 2.74 million viewers. At the end of season 2, the viewership went down to 2.28 million. The on-going third season, which is slated to air until 2017, apparently only has a little more than 1 million in viewership to date.

There are rumors that Blanchard and co-star Sabrina Carpenter, who plays Maya on the show, have resigned themselves to the impending doom of their show. Nevertheless, Disney is yet to release an official statement regarding the show's future, so for now, every speculation about it should be taken with a grain of salt.

While the matter of season 4 remains unsettled, fans could still enjoy Riley and Maya's banter when "Girl Meets World" season 3 episode 15 titled "Girl Meets World of Terror 3" airs on Oct. 14 at 8:30/7:30c on Disney Channel.
