It has been a while since the plans for a new "Star Trek" TV series was announced. As of the meantime, a little information has been disclosed regarding the production and development of the show initially titled "Star Trek: Discovery." The only thing apparent for now is that the fans could expect a lot of changes to be introduced in the new series.

One of the big changes in "Star Trek: Discovery" is the long-time "Star Trek" executive producer and showrunner, Bryan Fuller, stepping down from his previous role in the production. As reported by Variety, Fuller is no longer expected to be involved in making the huge decisions for the show. Still, it is reported that Fuller has already written the first two scripts for "Star Trek: Discovery" that will last for about one full season.

There is no confirmation about what exactly Fuller's role would be once "Star Trek: Discovery" is released. However, the fans can still expect the touch of the original "Star Trek" creator in the upcoming series.

Perhaps the most intriguing change that will happen in the new "Star Trek" series is that it will not actually be a TV series. "Star Trek: Discovery" is reportedly going straight to paid online streaming media instead of being a part of CBS's regular TV programming. According to Den of Geek, "Star Trek: Discover" will be released in CBS All Access for the viewers in North America, while the rest of the world can stream the episodes in the popular online streaming platform, Netflix.

In a podcast, CBS Interactive CEO Jim Lanzone explained the company's move to not air the upcoming "Star Trek" series on television.

"Sci-fi is not something that has traditionally done really well on broadcast. It's not impossible, for the future, if somebody figures it out. And things like 'Lost and Heroes' have had parts of, you know, sci-fi, but historically, a show like 'Star Trek' wouldn't necessarily be a broadcast show, at this point," said Lanzone.

As for the release date of "Star Trek Discovery," it is rumored that the premiere will be pushed back to May, a few months from the original January schedule.
