Disney CEO Robert Iger has just announced that the company is seriously considering producing more films beyond "Episode IX," the last one in the new trilogy.

He said, "We're just starting to talk about what happens to Star Wars after [Episode] 9. It's way too early, and certainly nothing that I can reveal, but we've got a creative team actually thinking about what could be another decade and a half of Star Wars stories," during a talk he gave at USC's Marshall School of Business.

The CEO has just recently renewed his contract with Disney, which will run until 2019. He was also instrumental in the company's acquisition of Marvel and Pixar.

Two "Star wars" films have been released since Disney bought Lucasfilm — "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" and "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story." Three more films are currently in the works — "The Last Jedi," the yet-untitled episode 9 film, and the Han Solo spin-off.

It remains to be seen if the planned films they are considering to make will continue the Skywalker family saga or if it will feature new stories or spin-offs, as is the case of "Rogue One" and the Han Solo movie. However, Gary Whitta, who wrote the screenplay for "Rogue One," hinted that the upcoming films will feature new characters in an interview with Digital Spy.

"One of the things we really want to do at Lucasfilm is create a universe and not keep relying on old legacy characters. We've got Rey and Finn and Kylo Ren, they've already introduced a new generation of characters," he said. He added that the introduction of these characters paved the way for making the franchise less reliant on what he described as the "legacy characters."

"The Last Jedi" will be shown in 2017, while Episode 9 will premiere in 2019. The standalone Han solo film, meanwhile, will be released in 2018.
