'Aquaman' plot updates: Writer teases action scenes and connection with 'Justice League'

As of now, the DC Cinematic Universe's (DCCU) Aquaman, Jason Momoa, is working on "Justice League" and screenwriter Will Beall took the time to talk about Momoa's solo Aquaman feature and what fans can expect from the King of Atlantis.

In an interview with Slash Film, Beall said that not all the action scenes in the film will be happening underwater. "Some of the most fun action in the movie actually takes place on dry land," said Beall. He also goes on to say that, as of now, the script is not finished. He's working on it with director James Wan and Geoff Johns.

"Justice League" also hits theaters way before "Aquaman" does, so fans were concerned if the Justice League movie would mess with any of the elements that Beall wanted to present in "Aquaman." He answers: "No, no, they know what's happening... Everybody knows what's happening so it's not that. It's working out what's going to make the best movie."

Though Aquaman has been the butt of every superhero joke since the "Justice Friends" cartoon, writers are constantly trying to change the public perception of the King of Atlantis. With Jason Momoa's take on Arthur Curry, James Wan goes so far as to call him the Wolverine of the DCCU.

With three films out, the DCCU has been playing a losing game of tag with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel currently has 13 blockbuster hits in its roster, most films gaining financial and critical success. DC movies, though financially successful, have been bashed hard by critics, and the recent "Suicide Squad" has not done anything but make the future of the DC films look bleak.

Fans, however, are still quite hopeful, and they are hoping to see the DCCU eventually hit its stride with upcoming films like "Wonder Woman" and "Justice League."

"Aquaman" is expected to premiere in July of 2018.
