'Arrow' season 5 spoilers, plot news: Superpower-less villain named; show to go back to its roots

"Arrow" returns to its roots in season 5. It will do so by moving away from hocus-pocus and by featuring a new villain whose greed will be the only power he'll need to bring Star City to its knees.

The new big bad for the upcoming season of the series is tentatively named Anton Church. The character is inspired by "The Wire" villain and drug kingpin Stringer Bell played by Idris Elba.
The "Arrow" season 5 villain is described in a CW casting call via TV Line as an "apex predator" who "cuts his way through the shadows" and prefers to take down the biggest threat.
That means he will directly go after Oliver (Stephen Amell), presumably when he decides to stop him from whatever troublemaking he is up to.
The fact that Anton Church has no superpowers shows that "Arrow" is determined to go street-level fighting action again, which fans loved about the show.
"Arrow" season 4 received heavy criticism due to the Black Canary (Kate Cassidy) being killed off. More than that, some fans believe that the show is focusing a bit too much on the Oliver-Felicity (Emily Bett-Rickards).
Amell, who believes that the hate the show receives is being shown as bigger than it actually is (thanks to social media), hopes that "Arrow" season 5 will be less about superpowered menaces and more about what the show really is in the veins.
"Even though Supergirl is joining the ranks, there's no new person or new show to introduce this year, and I think as a result of that, we need to get back to focusing more on some of the core elements that used to define Arrow," the actor told Entertainment Weekly.
"To me, that's hand-to-hand combat, no superpowers, and dealing with the job of cleaning up Star City," he continued.
"Arrow" season 5 will also include a new vigilante who is an ex-Marine. Colton Haynes is set to reprise his role as Roy Harper while Echo Kellum's Curtis Holt is promoted to series regular."Arrow" season 5 is expected to premiere this fall.
