'Doctor Who' Christmas Special 2016 spoilers: The Time Lord to face aliens with a masked superhero in New York

Christmas is just right around the corner, which means that the annual special episode of "Doctor Who" will finally air for the holidays.
For this year's Christmas special, the Time Lord will travel all the way to New York for another adventure. But this time, the Doctor will be joined by a superhero in a mask as they save the city from an imminent alien invasion.
Screen Crush released the synopsis for the Christmas episode titled "The Return of Doctor Mysterio" from BBC, which reads: "This Christmas sees the Doctor join forces with a masked Superhero for an epic New York adventure. With brain-swapping aliens poised to attack, the Doctor and Nardole link up with an investigative reporter and a mysterious figure known only as The Ghost. Can the Doctor save Manhattan? And what will be revealed when we see behind the mask?"
Fans of the series will remember Nardole (Matt Lucas) as the servant who thought that the Doctor is an actual surgeon who was hired to cure River Song's (Alex Kingston) husband from last year's Christmas special titled "The Husbands of River Song." He will return for the upcoming special episode this year to help the Time Lord work together with the superhero named The Ghost (Justin Chatwin) and reporter Lucy Fletcher (Charity Wakefield) to defeat the aliens who are planning to conquer New York.
The episode is written by executive producer Steven Moffat and directed by Ed Bazalgette.
"Doctor Who: The Return of Doctor Mysterio" Christmas 2016 special will be aired by BBC America at 9 p.m. It will be followed by a "Doctor Who" marathon after that.
Fans from Australia and New Zealand will also have the chance to see the episode on Dec. 26, while those in Canada will get to watch it on Dec. 28 and 29. On the other hand, fans from the United States will be able to watch the episode on Dec. 27 and 29.
