'Guardians of the Galaxy 2' release date, cast news 2016: James Gunn confirms Sylvester Stallone's appearance

The director of Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2," James Gunn, is one of the most vocal celebrities on social media, and he has confirmed that John Rambo himself, Sylvester Stallone, will be in the movie.
In a Facebook post, Gunn made a recap of all the material that was revealed during the "Guardians" panel in Hall H at this weekend's San Diego Comic-Con, and he had this to say about Stallone's casting: "This was an amazing experience for me, considering I ran around in my backyard as a kid pretending I was Johnny Rambo. Working with Sly was one of the high points of shooting Vol. 2 for me. Who does he play? Well, I can't reveal that quite yet... but we do see him interacting with Yondu in the teaser."
As for Stallone's role, nothing has been confirmed, but fans have been suspecting that he will play somebody from the Nova Corps. Perhaps it can be a callback to his days as "Judge Dredd." The Nova Corps. uniform, after all, does seem to have an uncanny resemblance to it.
Fans are guessing that Stallone's role is more of a cameo in the film, but then again, all of that is just speculation. His part could eventually be bigger.
The first "Guardians of the Galaxy" movie banked a lot of its material from '70s and '80s nostalgia with the soundtrack and the references, and the sequel seems to take a step higher by casting top-grossing actors from that era. Aside from Rambo, the film will also feature Kurt Russell to play Peter Quill's father, Ego the Living Planet. Though it does stem very far away from Quill's father in the comics (J'son of Spartax), the director seems to have different things planned for the character.
"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" has just wrapped filming and is set for release on May 5, 2017.
