"Guardians of the Galaxy" was a surprise hit for Marvel Studios last 2014. Who would have thought that a gang of space bandits (and a talking raccoon) would turn out to be such a commercial success? Leave it to director/writer James Gunn to come up with a movie full of action, heart, and laughs. The sequel, "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2," is set for a 2017 release and now, it seems like shooting for the film has officially wrapped.

Recent reports around the internet bid news of great tidings to fans of Marvel's favorite team of intergalactic misfits — "Guardians of the Galaxy 2" has finally finished filming and a new synopsis has been revealed. Marvel's release of the official synopsis reportedly reads, "Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes' aid."

This news has fans guessing on who this enemy-turned-friend is going to be. One popular guess is Michael Rooker's character, Yondu. To those who may be unfamiliar with the comics, Yondu was actually a member of the original Guardians of the Galaxy team, way before the likes of Star-Lord and Rocket Raccoon joined their ranks. Some comic fans might even be confused that Yondu turned out to be a villain in the film, but seeing the blue-skinned alien join the Guardians in the sequel might do justice to the comic incarnation of the character.

One more popular theory is that fans get to see Nebula — Gamora's (Zoe Saldana) estranged sister and daughter to Thanos (voice Josh Brolin) â€” join the Guardians. In an interview with Comic Book Resources, Karen Gillan, who plays Nebula in the movie, says, "I think what I'm really excited about [is] delving into the sisterly relationship between Gamora and Nebula. I think that we're going to see a little bit more of that, and it's going to be a bit more fleshed out."

Even though rivals in the first movie, Nebula and Gamora share a similar dislike for their father, Thanos, so viewers can expect these two to form some sort of alliance and bring the Mad Titan down.

Marvel Studios is going to have their own panel at the San Diego Comic-Con taking place on July 21–24, so fans can expect more news on the Guardians sequel then.

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" is set to premiere on May 5, 2017.
