'Homeland' season 6 news, spoilers: Female president-elect is focus of new season

There's still a few months left before the United States finds out if it will finally have a female president in the White House, but in Showtime's "Homeland," a female president-elect is said to be the focus of the upcoming sixth season.
In May, Showtime revealed that the political drama/thriller will be taking on the presidential election in its new season. According to a press release from the network, "Homeland" season 6 takes place in "a strange, transitional time in the halls of government filled with anxiety and different competing interests, where a very fragile and complex transfer of power takes place between the outgoing president and the incoming president-elect."
During a Q&A session at an event in New York City on Tuesday, June 7, "Homeland" star Claire Danes, who plays Carrie Mathison in the series, announced that a female president-elect will be at the center of events in the upcoming sixth season.
This president-elect, who will be navigating the chaotic period between the elections and the inauguration, will not necessarily be patterned after Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, Danes said. Rather, the actress explained, as quoted by NME, the female president-elect will be a "kind of a composite of all of the different candidates and a kind of — not rebellious necessarily — but she's challenging norms and is a little threatening for that reason."
According to Danes, the character will get along well with Carrie.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly in May, "Homeland" showrunner Alex Gansa said, "There is this strange period in America where there are 72 days when it's not exactly clear who's in charge."
During this transitional period, Gansa explained, the new president will have to learn what it means to lead a country. The "Homeland" boss also hinted at a "very complex" and anxiety-ridden transfer of power involving competing agendas.
The premiere of "Homeland" season 6 was recently pushed to January 2017 from its original debut in the fall.
