'How to Train Your Dragon 3' release date, plot news: Hiccup and Toothless to part ways forever?

The third "How to Train Your Dragon" film is currently in its pre-production phase and it looks to be the last film in the "HTTYD" franchise. The story is said to revolve around Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) and Toothless as they part ways, seeing that the separation of humans and dragons would be what was best for their kind.

Dean DeBlois, the director of the first "HTTYD" films, said that the upcoming movie will see Hiccup and Toothless in their prime, and that there will be no more other dragons in the film to allow audiences to focus on the two. It seems that the story will have Hiccup remembering what it was like to have dragons years before they disappeared, and Hiccup will have to learn to stand on his own.

Original cast members Kristen Wiig, TJ Miller, Jonah Hill, and America Ferrera are set to return as well, as per Movie News Guide. What's puzzling is the inclusion of Gerard Butler in the cast list. Butler's character in the last film, Stoick the Vast, was killed by Toothless, so it wouldn't make sense for Stoick to be alive in this next film. This probably means that viewers will see Stoick in a flashback scene.

Cate Blanchett is also set to return as Hiccup's mother, Valka, and Djimon Hounsou is rumored to return as the villain, Drago Bludvist. According to IMDb, Bludvist was supposed to be the villain in the third film, with Valka set to be the main antagonist in "HTTYD 2," but he was bumped up to appear in the second film as well. The last film still left the character's fate ambiguous, so it is quite possible to have Drago return to wreak havoc on the village of Berk.

"How to Train Your Dragon 3" is set for a release on June 20, 2018, so fans of the series may have to wait a while before seeing Hiccup and his friends again. Rumors say that the film is going to be a real tearjerker.
