'Lego Movie 2' release date news 2016: Gets a rewrite from 'BoJack Horseman' creator

"The Lego Movie Sequel" is getting a rewrite from Raphael Bob-Waksberg, the creator of the hit Netflix animated series, "BoJack Horseman." Originally penned by the directors of the first "Lego" movie, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the script for the sequel is undergoing a rewrite because Warner Bros. reportedly wants a "fresh take" on the movie.
Variety reports that Lord and Miller, who are staying on the film as producers, are busy preparing for the "Star Wars" Hans Solo-centric spinoff film and thus cannot stay to direct the "Lego" sequel. Instead, the movie will be directed by Rob Schrab, who has worked on countless TV shows like "Community," which fans know starred Alison Brie. The actress, in turn, played Unikitty in the "Lego" franchise.
The project will be Bob-Waksberg's first film to write. Though he did create "BoJack Horseman" for Netflix, he has also worked on shows like "Adult Hospital" and "Save Me." Bob-Waksberg has also sold his short story collection to Knopf Publishing called, "Someone Who Will Love You in All Your Damaged Glory: Bang-Your-Knee, Bust-Your-Heart-Open Love Stories."
"The Lego Movie Sequel" has been moved from its original release date of May 2018 to Feb. 8, 2019, but that doesn't mean that "Lego" fans won't be getting any Lego-themed movies anytime soon. "The Lego Batman Movie" is set to release February of 2017, and it stars Will Arnett as the Lego version of Batman, first introduced in "The Lego Movie" back in 2014.
There is also a "Lego Ninjago" movie scheduled for a September 2017 release, and it follows the story of six young ninjas who defend their island home of Ninjago by night and go to high school by day. The movie stars Dave Franco, Jackie Chan, Zach Woods, and Kumail Nanjiani. No report on whether the movie will have connections to the series "Lego Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu."
"The Lego Movie Sequel" is still coming out in 2019, but for fans curious about the writing style of Bob-Waksberg, they can check out "BoJack Horseman" on Netflix; the third season is set to come out July 22.
