"Pokemon Go's" Buddy System has indeed made it easier to evolve Pokemon, especially the rare ones that can hardly be found in the wild. Players recently found a way to trick the game into transferring the extra distance walked by one Buddy Pokemon to another.

According to OtakuKart, Redditor players discovered that it takes about five minutes for the "Pokemon Go" server to update the distance walked. For some, it may take from to 10 to 15 minutes, depending on the ping time rate between the player's phone and the server's API.

So when a player suddenly acquires enough candy to finally evolve a Buddy Pokemon before reaching the target distance walked, the extra distance can be transferred to a new Buddy Pokemon but only if a player manages to switch between Buddies before the server updates the game.

This method requires precision and diligence to figure out just how long the ping time rate is between the phone and the server. It also does not transfer entire walked distances, but only how much of it has been acquired in the last five minutes.

The distance that a player needs to walk to gain one candy varies depending on the rarity of a Pokemon. It is approximately half of the required distance to hatch that particular Pokemon's egg. The Silph Road, "Pokemon Go's" Reddit repository, has provided an illustrated chart that categorizes Pokemon species based on the distance required for one candy.

Pokemon species that are relatively easy to find like Raticate and Magikarp need to be walked for only one kilometer to gain candy, while rare ones like Chansey and Onix require 5 kilometers. Those that are neither common nor rare like Bulbasaur and Squirtle need 3 kilometers per candy.

Players should also keep in mind that once a Buddy Pokemon has been chosen, the player can no longer go back to having no buddy to walk with. Buddy Pokemon can be changed any time, and according to Heavy, doing so does not reset the distance already walked for that particular Pokemon. The progress is reset back to zero only after a Pokemon has evolved.
