As detailed in US Gamer, the pre-requisite to join a gym battle is to reach level 5. Once they have reached that level, they must pick a team of their choice. They can choose from Team Mystic (blue), Team Instinct (yellow), and Team Valor (red). One tip that gamers can follow is to select a team based on the gyms held in their location as this will be more convenient in finding a gym to join.

After picking a team, gamers can now start entering a gym. However, they will need to look for gyms that have vacant spaces so that they can join in. Gyms initially provide three-member slots only. They will know if a gym is unclaimed if it is colored gray. The next step is to assign a Pokémon to defend the gym as this will increase the gym's prestige and even boost its defenses.

Pocket-Lint detailed that prestige is what the game calls the measure of a gym. Gamers can alter this by training or battling. The prestige of a gym can increase with every win, and once it reaches a certain high level, the gym level increases and another defender can be allowed to enter.

In case there aren't gyms available to join in anymore, one can opt to prepare for a battle to take over a gym. However, players who are planning to do this must be well-trained, strong and battle-ready if they want to defeat multiple defenders of the gym.

The whole point of the existence of gyms is to battle with other trainers. To start a battle, players can tap the little boxing glove icon that pops out when they are close to they gym. They will then pick a Pokémon that will go to the arena to fight. Trainers who are able to successfully defend their gym can earn Pokécoins.
